Question 6A320

Element 6 (Radiotelegraph)

Voltage regulation is ____ with a high resistance choke:

Explanation
Voltage regulation is a measure of how well a power supply maintains a constant output voltage despite changes in the load current. A choke, or inductor, used in power supply filters, has an inherent DC resistance (DCR). According to Ohm's Law (V = I * R), when current flows through a resistance, there will be a voltage drop. * At no load, the current flowing through the choke's resistance is minimal, resulting in a small voltage drop. * At full load, the load current is high, and this current must also flow through the choke's resistance. If the choke has high resistance, the voltage drop (I * R) across it will be substantial. This large voltage drop at full load means the output voltage will decrease significantly compared to the no-load voltage. A greater difference between the no-load and full-load voltage indicates poorer or "worse" voltage regulation. Therefore, a high resistance choke degrades voltage regulation.
