Question 8-42E1

Element 8 (RADAR)

Waveguides can be constructed from:

Explanation
Waveguides are transmission lines designed to carry microwave frequencies with minimal loss. The fundamental requirement for their construction material is high electrical conductivity. At microwave frequencies, the "skin effect" causes the electrical current to flow predominantly on the inner surface of the waveguide. Therefore, minimizing resistive losses requires a material with excellent conductivity on this surface. Brass, aluminum, and copper are all excellent electrical conductors. Copper offers the highest conductivity among the three, but aluminum is lighter and often more cost-effective. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, also possesses good conductivity and mechanical strength. All these materials effectively minimize signal attenuation by providing a low-resistance path for the electromagnetic waves. Thus, any of them can be used, making "All of the above" the correct answer.
